Buggin' out...

So whilst I was mowing our lawn yesterday, I drove by one of our fence posts and noticed there was a small toad hanging on to the side. Only, on second glance - it wasn't a toad. It was a rather LARGE insect. Like, the size of a really big date - maybe 2" long by 1" wide. Looked kind of like a beige praying mantis, mixed with a beetle, carrying a miniature brain on it's back. I went back when I was done mowing and snapped a couple shots of this baby. I haven't got a CLUE what it is, but I can tell you it has no business being in New York. After looking for 3 hours online at whatsthatbug.com (and even sending them an e-mail with photos which I still haven't gotten a response to) I still don't know what this thing is. My guess is some kind of weevil, judging from the 85,000 bug photos I looked through. Any of you have any guesses? All I know is I have a sudden desire to wear socks and closed toe shoes in my yard.

Wow....how big is a "really big date"? Could she fit in the Crackerbarrel?
